Match Day 5 - Chile U17 & U18

The last two games of tour saw RGS pit themselves against Chilean national sides. The 2nd XV made up of almost predominantly Year 11 students played the Chilean U17 side. Many of the RGS boys were therefore giving away a year of physical maturation, size and power. It was a very brave performance with George Ashton claiming the first try against the Chilean national side. Despite a lack of physical size, the line out dominated and eventually the team succumbed to the Chilean power as opposed to a lack of skill. Special mentions to Finn O’Mahony, Toko Avalani and Ben Webber for their commitment throughout the game. The final score was 42 - 5 did not reflect the game, with Chilean fresh legs scoring 3 late tries against a tired RGS team after a long hard tour.

The 1st XV were keen to bounce back after a heavy defeat against Craighouse. They played with intensitiy, pace and skill and dominated large parts of the first half. Two superb tries by Efan Morris and Jack Burniston and several other opportunities were unfortunately not quite finished. The half time score read Chile U18 - 8, RGS - 10. The second half saw the game swing from end to end with RGS again creating several try scoring opportunities which couldn’t quite be converted into points. As the game moved into its final quarter Chile’s ability to rotate a large fresh squad and RGS’s fatigue at the end of the tour eventually told. Chile scored to take the lead, 15 - 10 and with RGS throwing the kitchen sink at Chile towards the dying seconds of the game, Chile scored against the run of play to break RGS hearts. Final score 22 -10. It was a great performance which deserved a better outcome and had RGS been more clinical they would have enjoyed the scalp of an international test team. Brilliant end to tour.

This has been a brilliant tour creating outstanding memories.
